Fibroids can develop throughout a woman’s life from their early 20s all the way up until menopause. We do not know exactly what causes fibroids to form but women may have one of the following risk factors
- Older age
- African American race
- Family history of fibroids
- Obesity
- Early start of your menstrual cycle
- Diet high in excess fat or alcohol consumption
Symptoms from fibroids can vary widely. It depends on how many fibroids you have, where they are located and how they grow over time. The most common symptoms related to fibroids are pelvic pain, pelvic pressure and heavy menstrual cycles. Other symptoms can include low back pain, constipation, bladder pain and pain with intercourse.
We diagnose fibroids using imaging studies such as ultrasound or CT scan. Some women find out they have fibroids on a CT scan done for another medical problem. We conveniently have expert OB/GYN sonographers in our office and can perform ultrasounds for women who suspect they may have fibroids. Once we know you have fibroids we also use ultrasound technology to monitor them on a regular basis.
Treatment Options
Thankfully there are many treatment options available to women who suffer with fibroids. Our physicians understand the importance of personalized care so we will work to develop a treatment plan that works best for your body. Treatment options range from regular monitoring to medication options to surgical procedures.
Some fibroids are small and do not cause many symptoms. These are fibroids that we can continue to monitor over time
Medications we use to manage fibroids can aim to decrease the amount of blood flow a woman in having during her menstrual cycle, improve pain associated with fibroids and in some cases even decrease the overall size of the fibroids.
Surgical options can include myomectomy which is removal of the fibroids or hysterectomy which is removal of the entire uterus with any associated fibroids and will result in a woman not having her menstrual cycle anymore.
