How Does a Hysterectomy Help?
By removing the uterus, cervix, fallopian tube and sometimes ovaries this can help to treat a wide variety of conditions a woman may face such as:
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Uterine fibroids
- Adenomyosis
- Endometriosis
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Uterine prolapse
This is just a short list of examples, but each woman has her own unique history and the team at Associated Women’s Healthcare can help you decide if a hysterectomy is right for you.
What Are the Types of Hysterectomies?
At Associated Women’s Healthcare, we understand that every patient is entirely unique, which is why our specialists may recommend a variety of different hysterectomy types, such as:
- A partial hysterectomy: Also known as a sub-total or supracervical hysterectomy, this procedure only removes the upper portion of the patient’s uterus, leaving the cervix in place.
- A total hysterectomy: The majority of hysterectomies performed will belong to this category, which is the standard for removing both a woman’s uterus and cervix.
- A radical hysterectomy: This type of hysterectomy is typically performed when a women has a type of gynecologic cancer. A radical hysterectomy is used to remove these organs in addition to the upper part of the vagina, tissue surrounding both sides of the cervix.
How is a Hysterectomy Performed? What is Recovery Time?
- Abdominal hysterectomy: This is the traditional way hysterectomies were performed prior to advancement of minimally invasive techniques. We make an incision similar to that of a C-section on the lower abdomen and remove the uterus through that incision. Most patients will recover in the hospital for 2-3 days afterwards.
- Robotic (or minimally invasive) hysterectomy: Performed with the da Vinci robotic system which advanced technology to provide the surgeon with precise movement and control. A few small incisions are made on the abdomen and a small laparoscopic camera is inserted to visualize the pelvis. This allows for smaller incisions, faster recovery, fewer complications and quicker return to daily life for our patients! Many patients can be candidates to go home the same day. All of our physicians are specially trained to perform these hysterectomies.
Should I Get a Hysterectomy?
It may seem a bit overwhelming with all the possibilities regarding a hysterectomy. The best solution is to consult with a specialist on the subject. Associated Women’s Healthcare has extensive experience in treating a wide range of uterine conditions using multiple types of hysterectomy procedures.
