Ultrasound Basics
An ultrasound is also called a sonogram and is performed at various times in your pregnancy. Your first ultrasound will be in the first trimester and this is the joyous first time when you get to see your baby and watch his or her heart beat! This also provides your doctor with information how far along you are in the pregnancy and when you estimated due date will be.
Your next ultrasound happens during the 18-20 week gestational age. Some women will be referred to a high-risk specialist for this ultrasound while others will have it performed in our office. During this ultrasound we have a checklist of your baby’s anatomy that we review and we can reveal the gender to you if you want know! We look at your placenta and amniotic fluid as well.
Many women will have another sonogram in the third trimester which is any time after 28 weeks. This allows us to more closely monitor the growth of your baby and re-check your amniotic fluid level.
There are also different types of ultrasounds, some that take measurements for fetal growth, and others that look at fetal movement and breathing.
Quality prenatal care should be individualized so some women may have reasons for additional sonograms throughout the pregnancy depending on their personal history.
